Northern Morocco

March 4 - 14, 2025

Join us on a ten day trip to Northern Morocco, following stories of mystics, heroes and ancient people who lived in the lands along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

We will begin our trip in Tétouan, nestled in the Rif Mountains, known for its whitewashed medina and rich Andalusian heritage, and end in Tangiers, a bustling port city on the Strait of Gibraltar.

This will be as much of a journey of self discovery, as the chance to meet Northern Moroccan culture through the lens of traditional stories, sacred sites and local people.

Sufi tradition tells the story of el Khader, the green man, who can be found by those who seek him, there, at the confluence of two seas, initiating the wanderers, sojourners, the seekers.

KARMIT:

“I’ve been living near the Strait of Gibraltar for the past 15 years and have been crossing the Strait to visit Morocco all these years. My own ancestors crossed these waters from Spain to Morocco several centuries ago, and settled down in Fez and later in Meknes.

I am fascinated by the layered stories of cultural exchanges between these territories, stories of power, expulsion, colonialism, cross-culturalism, modernity and tradition. I want to tell you about the sacred sites I got to know in the North of Morocco, about my relationship with people and places and the uniqueness of the places I frequent - in preparation for the course I will offer there next Spring.”
